The Chief Engineer is the head of the Engineering Department and is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation of all machinery, equipment, and technical systems onboard the LPG tanker. The Chief Engineer ensures the vessel’s propulsion, power generation, cargo handling, and safety systems are maintained to the highest standards while complying with international maritime regulations, company procedures, and charterer requirements.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Engineering Department, ensuring safe and efficient vessel operations.
- Plan, supervise, and control all engineering and maintenance activities onboard.
- Ensure continuous readiness and reliability of propulsion, auxiliary machinery, and cargo handling systems.
- Allocate duties and provide guidance, training, and performance management for engineering staff.
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of:
- Main propulsion engines and associated systems.
- Auxiliary engines and generators.
- Boilers, pumps, compressors, and hydraulic systems.
- Steering gear and deck machinery.
- Electrical and automation systems.
- Ensure all planned and corrective maintenance activities are completed in accordance with the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
- Monitor machinery performance and implement preventive measures to reduce operational downtime.
Requirements
- Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (STCW III/2 Unlimited).
- Valid STCW certificates and seafarer’s medical certificate.
- LPG Tanker Familiarization and Advanced Gas Tanker Endorsements as required.
- Previous experience as Chief Engineer on LPG, LNG, gas tanker vessels.
